Since the beginning of 2015, nearly 700,000 migrants fleeing conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere have made their way to Europe through Greece. For many, their first major step into Europe is on the island of Lesvos. The Greek island has been deeply impacted by as many as 5,000 migrants arriving on its shores daily. It is both a crossroads and a microcosm of the largest migration of people since World War II.
